MSC New York became the first mega container ship to call the Port of Colombo. The 16,650-TEU newbuilding of Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) berthed at Colombo International Container Terminals (CICT) on November 19.

CICT, which is a state-of-the-art facility, is the only South Asian deepwater terminal capable of handling the largest ships afloat. Owner and operator of the facility is China Merchants Holdings International Company Ltd. (CMHI), Honk Kong-based.

The commercial general manager of the facility, Tissa Wickramasinghe, described the day as “proud” for the port.

“Having completed the construction and equipping of the south harbour container terminal in a record time of 28 months and after being in operation for just over one year, CICT has managed to attract one of the largest vessels afloat,” he added.

According to Mr Wickramasinghe, the long-term success of CICT depends on the future success of the Port of Colombo. In order to compete with other regional hub ports, the CICT will continue offering very high standards of service delivery, productivity and customer service. Mr Wickramasinghe added that for achieving its goal, CICT would be accessing the China Merchants marketing.

MSC New York (IMO number 9606314 and MMSI 352952000) was delivered to its owner, MSC, on October 20. The vessel called the Port of Colombo on its maiden voyage and upon completion of cargo operations at CICT, it left with a full load of 14,896 TEUs.
